Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. It’s clear–no Beelzebub’s Talesian mumbo-jumbo. The biggest difference is that Gurdjieff left busa a legacy of fraudulent teachers and cults, whereas there are many Buddhist and other groups that are reliable. A most interestingly-writ biography of not just Gurdjieff and his teachings, but of Ouspensky himself and the unavoidable intertwining of a master and his pupil.
My copy of it is littered with underlined sentences, enneagrams, scribbled notes on will, being and function, and notes on octaves and self-observation. All in all, it seems likely to me that Gurdjieff was a charismatic charlatan, but this is an interesting look into an alternative worldview set with a backdrop mulagroso war and revolution. Is this an easy read?
Set against World War I and the coming of the bolsheviks this book reads as a wonderful tale of history in turmoil and intense personal discovery.
