I assume she’s taking this series to some kind of conclusion, but it’s hard to see how it all will fit together.

To rate and review, sign in. The characters aren’t as well explored as we know she is capable of doing, but still intriguing enough for me to want to know what happens next. It’s that old type of fantasy wh I’m giving this three stars because it’s Diana Wynne Jones and I can’t bear to give her anything less. Unfortunately after raving about the complexity of Diana Wynne Jones’s writing, I found an example of what happens when she doesn’t quite get it right.

I began reading this book and after the first page i considered putting it down and taking it back-i’m glad i didn’t. To aammet back at them, she and Ynen decide to make it look as if they’d run away and gone for a sail on her new boat, the Wind’s Road.

I found it strange because it deals with a society that doesn’t exist, but in a realistic way – not the jokes and silly stuff you find in a lot of fantasy.
The fantasy story is brilliant and i thoroughly enjoyed it. No one remembers why the ritual has to be performed, but no one dares to alter the tradition. He shares the narration with Hildy, who is decidedly less sympathetic at times, at least in comparison to Mitt.

Drowned Ammet by Diana Wynne Jones
The people of Holand in South Dalemark are bitterly oppressed by the tyrannical earl Hadd. It’s that old type of fantasy where there’s a lot of backstory, a lot of telling, and it bounces around in 3rd person omniscient to keep some distance from the characters emotionally. So I try to think like a child when I read her work it sort of pleases me, the way people are often so snobby about children “not understanding” adult literature — which I did, on some level at least, from the age of nine — that perhaps this is something children understand b Diana Wynne Jones doesn’t make the worldbuilding too easy to follow.

The resolution was interesting and the characters do grow, but it didn’t quite make up for them being pretty unlikeable and foolish for a lot of the beginning.
