Barker did a fine job demonstrating the evidence or rather lack of it for a historical Jesus, and painted a nice picture of the primary sources available from the time period.
Do I agreed with it? He is at his strongest when he addresses the content and contradictions of the Bible and of Christianity. I repeated the questionstressing the first word: I believe in having an open mind.
They come to it from close analysis and deep reflection.
The reference to Jesus in Josephus so loved by evangelicals magically appears in versions of Josephus two centuries after Josephus is supposed to have written it. Is it fair for a Catholic godlezs dismiss Judaism before memorizing the Talmud in the original Hebrew?
I am looking forward to the chapters of godlezs insights on biblical lore. Barker has been an invited speaker at Rock Beyond Belief.
There is a narcissistic, self-aggrandizing tone to his writing.
There are millions of unqualified Christians who have only the slightest familiarity with the bible, yet their decision to believe is considered praiseworthy. And if numbers validates truth, what about the millions of people who believe in religions that are opposed to Christianity Islam and Judaism, for example. He does an excellent job explaining the struggles in leaving a fundamentalist world for one that fits the reality of existence.
Sadly, I know that very few of the latter will dare to read it. Bart Ehrman outclasses him in his books, sure, but he’s a professional historian. Part 4, “Life is Good! Deconversion stories all seem to share a common narrative arch——the most important aspect of which is a period of glaring ignorance and indoctrination followed by an awakening of the mind to other viewpoints and shortcomings of the believer’s sacred text. I had travelled a similar journey albeit in a less publicised way.

Ulysses Press- Religion – pages. Feb 01, Sally rated it really liked it Shelves: From Preacher to Atheist. Dan Barker’s past as an Evangelical gives him the advantage of knowing how many Bible-believing Christians think and interpret their holy book.
Unless you decide to get overzealous, you don’t need to read much else on the subject. Live your own life. I have nothing but admiration for someone who is able to let go of a fallacious belief when faced with overwhelming evidence that it is wrong.

Love is not obedience, conformity, godlesd submission. This is a great alternative to books such as “The God Delusion,” especially for those who prefer a tad less venom in their reasonings for a go A well told, fascinating story of an evangelical preacher turned atheist. I think I’ve heard several atheist say before that if you come out as an atheist you have to be ready to lose relationships, even your closets ones, and I’m not.
Aside from the interesting legal aspect of the book, is there anything fresh? Agnosticism addresses knowledge; atheism addresses belief. If he’d gone deeper, the book would have been more consistent. Second, Dan Barker’s journey from minister to atheist is only one third of this book and it is the most interesting part.
And once the faith had really disappeared, his experience certainly shed light on my own clinging to a pretence for so long. Jun 30, Justin rated it liked it. There are baroer few autobiographical stories that are of interest.
