MacLean was unbelievably popular during his lifetime but he was always underrated. The plot is fairly fast-paced, along with some credible and some crsader credible escapes.

Their immediate fate, after they are spirited aboard a disreputable schooner captained by an even more disreputable Australian, may strike the reader as being a bit far-fetched. Bentall is bumbling as an agent, but he doesn’t seem to have been trained, just pulled away from the rocket programme to investigate a situation in the Middle East.

It is hard to imagine most of them playing baccarat for high stakes at a casino on the Riviera. There are better Maclean books but this one was a rotter.
The only good thing I’ll say about this book is that Maclean had an engaging narrative style that’s fun to read. Isn’t it remarkable how an old paperback book–a mass of thinly cut wood pulp and ink marks–can sit ignored on a bookshelf for many decades, gathering dust, and yet, when ultimately opened and perused, maintain its ability to convey information and transport the reader?
The novel offers has two endings, one in which Bentall must choose between saving Hopeman and preventing the theft of the missile, and the other in which he finally unravels the last details of the plot with his boss.
The author never set out to create a super spy, but a character that can be defined in one word: This was something else to take up with the medical profession. Bentall, a physicist specializing in rocket fuels and working for the British government on counter espionageis paired with Marie Hopeman, an inexperienced agent, assigned to pose as his wife.
I became vaguely aware that Anderson and the red-faced man, whom he addressed as Farley, were talking together and then the crussader vanished.
